It’s time to focus…I think..

Staying focused can be the struggle of all struggles. If I may be honest, (as usual) it is so easy to be unfocused because it’s so easy to not get things done. Instead of organizing my home, I’d rather plop on the couch and watch “Iyanla: Fix My Life” as I continuously disregard the ability that I too, can fix my life. In our daily lives we can become so distracted by things that are not that important, but the feeling of getting things done is so much more rewarding. There are few tips I have learned and took from others on how to get focused and stay focused.

  1. Reorganization = Determination

One of the things I live by is: A clean space = a clear mind. If you are feeling in a funk and just can’t seem to get right, cleaning up your home, dorm, work space and even your car can immediately re-organize your mind. But a lot of times it’s hard to even get to that step of cleaning up. How can you eagerly get out of bed on a Saturday morning and your favorite show is on but you know that you should go run errands, meet friends for brunch and clean your house. First, you set the goal. Make a statement to yourself that, “today is the day of getting things done.” Once you make that goal and make an effort to commit to it, is the beginning start of having focus for the day.

2. Choose your tune.

Music is amazing. It can change your mood so much. There are tunes for everything. If you want to be motivated, sad, happy, angry or mellow, music can change your mindset. Getting ready to take a final, midterm or quiz is like getting prepared for a marathon. You can’t just jump right into it. You have to get prepared and get mentally ready for the task that you are about to take on.  So turn on some jams and get your juices flowin’.

3. To wander or, not wander

Naturally our minds wander. We think about things that are not even relevant to our lives at the moment. Naturally we think about the things that will happen later and not focus on the here and now. How many times have you been focused on your school work, career or a specific project and your mind drifts off to: “What am I going to cook for dinner?” “I wonder if it’s going to rain tomorrow?” “Mmmhh..tacos.” Often times our minds wander to things that don’t pertain to our current situations but when you realize that you are not focusing on what you could be, immediately re-think your thoughts. Remind yourself that you are capable of focusing and committing to and completing your task at hand.
