Why it’s OK to be Selfish…Sometimes

Growing up I had a BAAADDD habit (and still do at times) of being selfish. I would always put my needs, wants, desires and emotions before everyone else. My mother used to tell me “It’s not always about you.” Friends would tell me, “You get so upset if something doesn’t go your way.”

I had the “it’s all about me” syndrome. Consequently, that pattern never got me anywhere.

However, now that I am in my twenties which is almost my thirties, which is almost my forties, which is around the corner from my fifties, means I should have a noble peace prize by now or at least have my life all the way together.

Okay, maybe I am over exaggerating a little but time seems to be slipping by faster now-a-days.

Being in a foreign town without the comfort of my loved ones is a journey. The twenty-something years is like that odd age where you are no longer a child but almost, pretty much an adult. Believe me, the thought frightens me, too.

It’s not always a bad idea to consider yourself in situations before considering other things. Now, I am NOT saying that you should put yourself a head of others and have a sense of entitlement everywhere you go and feel the world owes you something. That is NOT the message I want to convey. For anyone reading this who feels they get lost in the wind or stagnant in life or is mentally and spiritually drained by others, this message may be for you…

In every situation that you go through, getting a new job, losing a job, buying a house or going to college every person that you engage with or connect with is there to teach you something. And sometimes you may not see it right then in that moment but later you may realize how thankful you are to have cross paths with that person.

What are you ever going to loose in being yourself? What are you ever going loose by standing up for what you believe in? What are you going to loose by taking in the good moments and sharing those good things with others? NOTHING. But you have so much to gain. Experiences, strength and happiness.

If you don’t take anything else from this post. Take this:

Be selfish by being yourself. Be selfish by enjoying all the precious gifts life brings your way. Be selfish by guarding yourself from any hurt, harm or danger that you may inflict upon yourself.

Sincerely,
